Grade 10 Writing Challenge Top Submission (Mercedes) - End to Hunger

Submission Title: End to Hunger

Every little bit helps. Four words that people who volunteer at Daily Bread Food Bank live by. These people prove that in order to make a difference all you need is the ambition for change.

A couple of days ago I ventured on a trip to Daily Bread Food Bank along with several other Applewood Heights students. The experience made me open my eyes and truly become aware of what’s going on in my home province. The surreal emotions that struck me from the exact point of arrival were shocking and overwhelming. At first I felt that apologetic was the way I should feel. Sorry for overlooking homeless people on the streets for years, never finishing the food that was on my plate, and for arguing about my family’s dinner choice with my brother and sister. I now realize that not everyone gets to make those decisions, or even have food available to them at all. I knew that hunger was an issue in a lot of people’s lives; however, I didn’t realize the true number of people that are forced to go to bed without a meal in their stomach. Food has not always been there for everyone. Some people strive to not only feed themselves but their families as well. The courage that these people posses to be able to share their situation with others as well as have the strength to ask for help is unbelievable.

On New Years Eve I was reminded by my family member to make a resolution for the coming year. At first I thought of school and making it a higher priority in my every day life. Than I though of work ethics and goals that I wanted to set and achieve in my work environment. Although these are valid resolutions it only became truly clear to me after my trip to the food bank, that the best resolution that I could possibly make would be to help more people. Now I am proud to tell people my New Years resolution, because I know that it is something that I will achieve to the fullest. I look forward to volunteering at Daily Bread Food Bank in the New Year and helping make a difference on this large Earth that we all call home.

They say that there is no such thing as a super hero and that they only exist in comic books. I now know that, that statement is one hundred percent wrong. The people that I met at Daily Bread Food Bank may not have the ability to fly from buildings attached to small spider webs, or be able to hold the weight of the entire world above their heads, but they do have one of the most useful powers of all. That is the power to help. These people are devoted to making a difference in Ontario. They contribute in so many different ways all for the same cause, to end hunger. And if those aren’t qualities of a true hero, than I don’t know what is.

Grade 7 Writing Challenge Top Unique Submission (Leah) The Fight Against Hunger

Submission Title: The Fight Against HungerWho are the hungry?

The cold, homeless and depressed?
Perhaps the sad souls?

Yet they are not so,
In truth, they are not the poor,
They are the fighters.

They fight the battle,
Without any swords or knives,
They fight their hunger.

Inside the body,
The opponent’s strikes are hard,
They are too, too hard.

A stranger who’s kind,
Gives the ultimate weapon,
The enemy dies.

Yet it is not gone,
It will be back tomorrow,
For another fight.

Hunger is a problem that many Canadians face during their lives. An average person has basic needs each day: clothes, shelter, and food. In order to live, our body requires a diet that consists of a proper amount of food and water. People in Canada and all around the world may have difficulties doing so because of several different problems: there may be a person with disabilities living on welfare that is not enough, they may be a single parent and having to provide all the necessities to their child/children on their single paycheck that may not be sufficient. It may also be that a person would be working but cannot live off the given money; or it may be the case that they are in poverty and have no adequate money to have what is necessary. In any case people that are going to food banks cannot afford to buy food for themselves and their family.

I have come up with a few easy solutions so that we may lead to help solving the crisis of hunger. Our school community may be able to help: if we bring volunteers from the school to make lemonade during the summer and sell if for a small amount, the students may buy such because of the hot weather, or do the same for hot chocolate in the winter, in the end, we can collect the money and bring it to Daily Bread Food Bank. We can also help through our family: we can ask our relatives and/or family to bring some canned items to our house any time they come over, or at our school for a concert of special assemblies, at the end of the year we could bring all the food to Daily Bread Food Bank so that they may be able to feed more people. Aside from donating material goods to food banks we can donate our help by volunteering at the food bank. We can also go on the street and help people in poverty.

Just like any problem in this world, it will not heal itself. As a community we must stand up for what is right, and help. It will only aid all the people that cannot afford the things in which we take for granted. Some people in this world would be so gracious to have the slice of bread that we throw out, or the piece of fruit we dislike. Just because a lot of people in this country have the basic needs and more, doesn’t mean that everyone else does. Poverty will only end if we all help, I know that be being more educated about this problem that more people will feel the desire to help as I do. I thank all the food banks for their huge help in this crisis, and all the people who do the same.

There are hungry and poor people in Toronto. They have no money or food. In Toronto we have food banks and we can help out. As students, we can donate food in a school program, or we can just donate money to our local food bank. We can eat less fast food, and save the money to give to the people in need.
