Annual Volunteer Picnic at Daily Bread Food Bank

Addus%20Picnic4.JPG

On July 24th, a group of four participants (Fern, Cathy, Matthew and Stephanie) and two staff from Addus (Helen and Jordan) went to the annual volunteer picnic hosted by Daily Bread Food Bank. Addus is a charitable group that helps people with developmental disabilities to actively take part in their community – something everyone benefits from. We spent the day meeting with other groups and people who volunteer at Daily Bread throughout the year as well as meeting some of the food bank staff. It turned out to be a lucky day as three of the Addus participants won different raffle prizes including a gift basket and a couple of admissions passes to the Ex. It was a great day filled with fun and food.

Our group has been volunteering at Daily Bread Food Bank since February of this year. In this time Fern, Cathy, Matthew and Stephanie have learned skills that will help them when entering the job field. One of the jobs they have worked on while at the food bank was measuring and packaging dry goods in baggies for the food bank’s Staples Food Program – serving new immigrants and their families.

After completing a shift, the participants have a sense of accomplishment and look forward to the next time they get to volunteer. They have enjoyed this opportunity to give back to their community. We are grateful for the partnership and look forward to where it will take us!

Who's Hungry 2009 Profile of Hunger in the GTA

Daily Bread Food Bank’s latest Who’s Hungry: Profile of Hunger in the GTA was released this past June. Key statistics in the report include the fact that food bank client visits in the GTA have increased to over 1 million visits over the past year for the first time ever. Total client visits were 1,030,568, a rise of 8% over last year. More disturbing, in just the first three months of 2009 the increase in client visits averaged 17%.

Who’s Hungry 2009 is based on information collected from Daily Bread’s Annual Survey of People Accessing Emergency Food Banks. About 1,975 surveys were conducted from February to April 2009. Forty-nine food banks in Toronto and the GTA participated, and face-to-face interviews were conducted by over 100 trained volunteers. Surveys were translated into 10 languages to gather information from newcomer populations who do not speak English. Research is an important part of Daily Bread Food Bank’s fight to end hunger in our communities. Who’s Hungry 2009 reflects Daily Bread’s commitment to creating social change to reduce poverty through research, education and advocacy.

Check back in September 2009 for the release of our Who’s Hungry Youth Guide to Hunger in the GTA. This guide is full of information, definitions and stories relating to hunger and poverty that help you understand who is hungry, why, and start you thinking about what you can do to fight hunger. Daily Bread Food Bank also holds free educational workshops that help students and young adults understand the root causes of hunger and issues surrounding poverty in the GTA. The Who’s Hungry Youth Guide to Hunger in the GTA can be used in combination with these workshops, or as a great information tool for teachers, students and young adults to learn more about hunger and what it means in their community. Back to School

Are you a teacher looking for a way to get your students involved in the community?

Summer vacation is soon coming to an end. Teachers are making their way back to the classroom, students are getting ready for classes and Daily Bread Food Bank’s Fall Drive is about to begin.

With the launch of our Fall Drive less than a month away, this is a great opportunity for teachers to help students learn about the issues of hunger and poverty in the GTA and get involved in their community at the same time. Have your school join the fight against hunger by participating in our educational workshops and helping students organize their own drive.

Last year, there were over 1,030,568 client visits to food banks in the GTA; 35% of them were children. You and your students can help Daily Bread ensure that nutritious food gets to people who need it by running a food drive in your school this fall.
