2009 Fall Drive Launch

Blog%2012%20FD%20Launch.bmp

2009 has been a difficult year for most. Although there are signs that the economy is turning around, Daily Bread’s executive director Gail Nyberg probably put it best last Friday at the official launch of our 2009 Fall Drive: “I want to make it very clear that for a large number of people this recession is far from over,” said Nyberg. “The first people to feel the effects of this recession will also be the last ones able to get out of it.”

That means it is more important than ever to give during this drive. We are continuing to see increases in the number of client visits this year over last year. With over 1 million client visits to food banks across the GTA last year, we are asking the public to be as generous as possible. This year our goal is to reach $500,000 in donations and 500,000lbs of food.

How can you help?

You can run your own food or fund drive at your school. You could drop off nutritious non-perishable food items at any fire hall, thanks to the on-going support of Toronto Fire Services. You can even spread the word, and encourage family members to make a financial donation securely online at www.dailybread.ca or by calling us at 416-203-0050. Cheques can also be mailed to 191 New Toronto Street, Toronto ON M8V 2E7.

The Fall Drive 2009 runs from September 25 to October 19.

Here is a list of our most needed items:
■Baby formula & food
■Beans & lentils
■Canned fruits & vegetables
■Canned fish & meat
■Cans of soup or hearty stew
■Dried pasta & tomato sauce
■Macaroni & cheese
■Peanut butter
■Rice
■Tetra Pak, canned or powdered milk

Breakfast Television, CityNews and Metro Fall Food Drive

BT-CityNews-Metro.1.JPG

Congratulations to Breakfast Television and CityNews for helping out and setting up at the Metro grocery store on Eglinton at Bayview on Wednesday, October 7th, 2009. On this day BT, CityNews and Metro along with community members came out to help Daily Bread get that much closer to reaching our Fall Drive goal target of 500,000 pounds of food, and $500,000.

Each person who donated food at the Metro store was given the opportunity to fill out a ballot for a chance to win 10,000 Air Miles and other great prizes. Daily Bread Food Bank was grateful to the many people who came out throughout the day to donate food and funds.

Local Hockey Teams Lend a Helping Hand

Hockey%20Teams%20Fall%20Drive%20Public%20Sort2.JPG

On Saturday, October 10th, 2009 the 99 Toronto Red Wings Minor Hockey Team and the Scarborough Young Leafs Minor Peewee Team came in to help Daily Bread Food Bank’s team with our annual Fall Public Food Sort. The teams came out in full hockey uniform eager to help in any way possible. The teams showed great leadership skills as well as teamwork skills and were a huge help.

A BIG thank you goes out to everyone that took time out of their holiday weekend to sort through boxes of food donations.

The numbers are in after this Thanksgiving weekend – currently we are at just over 424,000 lbs of food donated which means we have almost reached our goal of 500,000 lbs. However, we are only at $193,000 for our financial goal with just over two days to go. Financial donations go a long way to helping fund the work we do here such as trucks to deliver the food or advocacy work with food bank clients. The Fall Drive ends this Friday October 16th, 2009. Keep those donations coming.

Our Fall Drive has officially ended and the numbers are in

With the help from the community we managed to raise over 633,000 lbs of food, beating the original goal of 500,000 lbs by 133,000 lbs. Although the financial donations matched what was raised in last year’s Fall Drive, they did not reach our much needed goal of $500,000 and remained low with approximately $324,000 raised.

Daily Bread’s member agencies continue to report an increase in client visits. Our Executive Director Gail Nyberg is concerned about being able to meet the growing needs of food bank clients. “It is great news that we surpassed our food goal especially considering the difficult year it has been. Food bank usage is up across the province and that is not good news for us,” said Nyberg. “I cannot stress enough the importance of financial donations to Daily Bread Food Bank. Those donations mean we can purchase food in greater amounts at a lower cost.” Financial donations also allow Daily Bread to ensure a consistent supply of the most needed items such as baby formula, or to purchase perishable items such as meat, dairy or fresh vegetables.

What can you or your school do to help out? How about a school-wide bake sale? Think creatively about what you and your classmates can do to help Daily Bread reach its goal and meet our financial donation for the upcoming year.

Here are a few creative ideas that may help you and your peers plan a fund drive at your school.
1. 50/50 Auction
2. Battle of the Bands or Benefit Concert
3. Car Wash
4. Dress Down Days
5. Fashion Show
6. Halloween Dance
7. Movie Screening
8. Message-O-Grams (Candy, flowers)
9. Sports Tournaments
10. Talent Show
